Emergency care providers are likely to encounter patients with communicable diseases. Airborne pathogens and other diseases can pose a risk to responders if they do not quickly recognize the signs and symptoms of disease and take proper precautions. This program describes the transmission, prevention, and signs and symptoms of the airborne, droplet and contact diseases that are a more common concern to the pre-hospital provider.

Information is included from the OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 Respiratory Protection Standard, the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act and guidelines, NEMSES instructional guidelines for Preparatory (Workforce Safety & Wellness) and Medicine (Infectious Diseases) and recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
