‘A’ from the H H H ABC routine for emergencies stands for Airway.

When performing CPR, Open the airway.

The person will normally be lying on his back. Place two fingers on the forehead and two fingers under the bony part of the chin and gently tilt the head backwards – the “head-tilt chin-lift” method of opening the airway.

What do you do when someone’s airway is blocked?

The first thing you need to remember is that you should NOT try to use your fingers or any other object to try and unblock someone’s airway.

To help with mild choking in an adult or child over one year old, encourage them to keep coughing to clear the blockage.
Ask them to try to spit out the object if it’s in their mouth.
NB: Don’t put your fingers in their mouth to help them as they may bite you accidentally.
