01 - HAZMAT Recognition
HAZMAT Recognition is title one of two in Action Training Systems' HAZMAT Awareness series, and SkillsTrain, the authorised ATS distributor, supplies it locally as part of that series. It is the awareness-level starting point, the first exposure a crew member gets before any response-level training, and its single job is teaching a responder to notice that hazardous materials may be involved at all.
The title shows the ways spilled or released hazardous materials cause harm to people and to the environment, which is what makes early recognition matter. It sets out the four basic clues a responder uses to recognise and begin identifying a hazardous material, and it walks through the kinds of occupancies where such materials are commonly stored or used, together with the typical containers they are kept in. The aim is to build the instinct to stop and assess rather than walk into a problem unaware.
It sits within ATS's HAZMAT range, aligned to NFPA 470 and positioned for OSHA HAZWOPER awareness, and uses the teach, test and track model that assesses the learner as they go and replays any section answered incorrectly. The programme runs about 16 minutes and is supplied on USB or as a classroom streaming option, individually or as part of the complete two-title series.
The four clues it introduces give a responder a simple framework, built around the type of occupancy, the containers in use and the markings on them, to apply before stepping any closer to a suspected release.
Who it is for: any first responder needing entry-level HAZMAT awareness before response training begins.

Awareness is the entry-level, two-title recognition and identification pathway. The separate seven-title HAZMAT Response series covers defensive response once an incident has been recognised.
What are the four basic clues it teaches?
The title presents the four clues responders use to recognise and begin identifying a hazardous material, drawn from occupancy, container type, markings and the senses, as the awareness-level foundation.
How long is it?
About 16 minutes, on USB or as a classroom streaming option, individually or as part of the two-title series.
