One interactive EMS library

Ready for South African services, with nothing to run

These are interactive EMS courses, delivered as classroom video streaming or individual online access codes. You do not need your own platform: Action Training Systems hosts the content, streams it to your training room and issues access codes for learners on their own. You bring the training room and the instructor. We bring the course content.

SkillsTrain is the exclusive South African distributor for Action Training Systems, a United States course developer that has built interactive emergency response training since 1988. This page covers the EMS library; the firefighter library has its own page.

Inside the EMS library

Two pathways, plus infection control

The CAPCE accredited core is 55 interactive courses, built for the two main levels of pre hospital care plus infection control. Here is how those 55 core courses break down, using Action Training Systems own figures.

EMT course series from Action Training Systems
EMT courses, 27 titles

Emergency Medical Technician

EMT stands for Emergency Medical Technician, a responder trained to give a broad range of emergency care and to use more advanced equipment and procedures.

EMR course series from Action Training Systems
EMR courses, 25 titles

Emergency Medical Responder

EMR stands for Emergency Medical Responder, the first on scene level trained to give immediate basic life support until more advanced help arrives.

Infection control course series from Action Training Systems
Infection Control, 3 titles

Stop the spread

Practical training on preventing the spread of infection, which matters on every call. Part of the CAPCE accredited core alongside the EMT and EMR pathways.

There is also a wider option. Action Training Systems publishes a complete CAPCE catalogue of 63 courses: the same 55 core courses plus 2 HAZMAT awareness, 1 HAZMAT response and 5 incident command and management titles. HAZMAT is short for hazardous materials, the training for incidents involving dangerous substances. So there are two honest ways to describe this library, both straight from ATS: 55 core EMS courses, or 63 in the complete CAPCE catalogue.

Teach, not just test

Courses that coach the gap, then check again

Plenty of online training plays a video, asks a question, marks a wrong answer and moves on, so you never learn the bit you missed. Action Training Systems built theirs differently: interactive video with teaching, testing and tracking together. When a learner answers incorrectly, the course stops, backs up and replays the information before letting them continue. Each course runs about an hour, and every step is tracked, so a training officer can see exactly who has completed what.

Continuing education, recognised

What CAPCE accreditation means for your responders

Course counts and accreditation are Action Training Systems figures, confirmed against the ATS catalogue in August 2026.

CAPCE

1 hr

Continuing education per course

NREMT

Qualifies as distributive education

Action Training Systems holds organisational accreditation from CAPCE, the Commission on Accreditation for Prehospital Continuing Education, the United States body that accredits continuing education for emergency medical providers. Each accredited course is worth one hour of continuing education (CE), the ongoing learning a certified responder must keep doing to stay current. These CE hours qualify as distributive education under the continued competency programme run by the NREMT, the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. These are internationally recognised United States accreditations.

Accreditation is held by Action Training Systems (CAPCE), not by SkillsTrain. SkillsTrain supplies and supports these courses in South Africa and does not deliver or accredit the training itself. If you need mapping to a specific South African qualification, talk to us and we will advise on fit.

Two simple ways to deliver

No platform for you to run

Action Training Systems hosts the content, so there is nothing for you to build or maintain. You bring the training room and the instructor. We bring the courses.

Classroom streaming

Stream to the training room

Most services take a classroom streaming subscription, so the instructor streams the course videos and resources in the room. Change the courses in your selection after the first year.

Online access codes

Individual online access codes

Issue individual online access codes for people who work through the material on their own. Every completion is tracked, so a training officer keeps the records they need for compliance.

Bring the courses in

Get your responders earning CE hours

SkillsTrain is the exclusive South African distributor for Action Training Systems. Tell us roughly how many responders you train and whether you want the core or the complete catalogue, and we will set up your streaming or access codes and send you a South African quote.

Frequently asked questions

How many EMS courses are in the Action Training Systems catalogue?

The EMS library holds 60 course titles. The CAPCE accredited core is 55 courses: 27 EMT (Emergency Medical Technician), 25 EMR (Emergency Medical Responder) and 3 infection control. Action Training Systems also publishes a complete CAPCE catalogue of 63 courses, which adds 2 HAZMAT awareness, 1 HAZMAT response and 5 incident command courses to the same core 55.

Are the online EMS courses accredited?

Yes, and the accreditation is held by Action Training Systems, not by SkillsTrain. SkillsTrain supplies and supports the resources; it does not deliver or accredit training. Action Training Systems holds organisational accreditation from CAPCE, the Commission on Accreditation for Prehospital Continuing Education, for its online interactive EMS courses. Each accredited course is worth one hour of continuing education that qualifies as distributive education under the NREMT (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians) continued competency programme.

How can I deliver these EMS courses to my team?

As a classroom streaming subscription, where the instructor streams the videos and resources in the training room, or as individual online access codes for responders working on their own. Action Training Systems hosts the content, so there is no platform for you to run, and every completion is tracked. SkillsTrain sets this up for you as the exclusive South African distributor.

What is the difference between EMR and EMT courses?

EMR (Emergency Medical Responder) is the first on scene level trained to give immediate basic life support until more advanced help arrives. EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) is trained to give a broader range of emergency care and to use more advanced equipment and procedures. The Action Training Systems catalogue covers both levels plus infection control.

How much do online EMS courses cost in South Africa?

Pricing is per learner, with lower rates for larger groups. SkillsTrain does not publish a fixed price list because the South African price depends on learner numbers, whether you choose the core or complete catalogue, and the exchange rate. Contact SkillsTrain with your learner numbers for a South African quote.

What makes these EMS courses different from ordinary online training?

They teach rather than only test. In Action Training Systems own words, when a learner answers a question incorrectly the course stops, backs up, and replays the information before letting them continue. Each course runs about an hour and tracks every learner progress, so training officers get the completion records they need.
