01 - Infection Control & Prevenion: Bloodborne Pathogens

Bloodborne Pathogens is the opening title in Action Training Systems' three-title Infection Control and Prevention series, and SkillsTrain, the authorised ATS distributor in South Africa, supplies it locally as part of that series. It is where a crew builds the exposure-control habits that protect them on every call that involves blood or an open wound.

The programme works through the bloodborne pathogens that matter most to emergency care providers, including hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV, and sets them against the standards and duties written into OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens requirement. It then shows the standard precautions, safe work practices and engineering controls a responder uses to cut the risk of occupational exposure, and walks through exactly what to do once an exposure incident has happened. It is aimed at EMS, fire and industrial first-aid teams who need an OSHA-aligned bloodborne-pathogen refresher for their people.

The series is built to help a service meet its ongoing and annual OSHA infection-control training, and this title uses the same closed-captioned video as the rest of the set. It uses the same teach, test and track model as the rest of the ATS interactive range: a learner is assessed as they work through the material, and any section answered incorrectly is replayed before they can move on. The programme runs about 24 minutes and is supplied on USB or as a classroom streaming option, on its own or as part of the complete three-title Infection Control and Prevention series.

Alongside it, SkillsTrain supplies the other two titles in the series, Airborne Pathogens and Other Diseases and Infection Control Practices, so a crew can cover the whole infection-control picture in one place.
