04 - Structural Collapse Rescue
Structural Collapse Rescue is the fourth title in Action Training Systems' Fire Service Rescue series, supplied in South Africa by SkillsTrain, the authorised ATS distributor. Structural collapse rescue is the work of reaching and freeing people trapped when a building, or part of one, fails. It turns on reading an unstable structure before committing to it, shoring and stabilising what remains, and searching voids in a disciplined order so that rescuers are not added to the casualty list.
This fourth title moves the Fire Service Rescue pathway on from the confined space work of the previous module into one of its higher-risk disciplines, introducing the collapse scenario and the methodical approach it demands.
Like the rest of the ATS range, the title uses an interactive teach, test and track model: it does not only quiz a learner, it teaches, and when an answer is wrong the course stops, backs up and replays the material before letting them move on. ATS puts the average length of its interactive courses at about an hour. The rescue disciplines in this series align to NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) standard 1006, the rescue and emergency operations qualification ATS references for its rescue material, kept current as the NFPA consolidates its standards.
Within the same ten-title Fire Service Rescue series, SkillsTrain also supplies Rescue Apparatus & Equipment, Rope Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Trench / Excavation Rescue, Vehicle & Machinery Rescue, Water & Ice Rescue, Wilderness Search & Rescue, Elevator Rescue and Fireground Search & Rescue, so a department can source the whole pathway from one supplier.
As the authorised ATS distributor in South Africa, SkillsTrain supplies it as an interactive online video course and on USB, individually or as part of the complete series, so South African services can buy ATS content locally rather than importing it directly. Who it is for: rescue technicians and urban search and rescue teams building structural collapse competency.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where does this sit in the series?
Fourth of ten, directly after Confined Space Rescue and before Trench / Excavation Rescue.
What makes collapse rescue higher risk?
An already-failed structure can fail again, so the title stresses stabilising and shoring and searching voids in order rather than rushing in.
How is it supplied?
As an interactive online video course and on USB, individually or as the complete ten-title Fire Service Rescue series.
