05 - Water Shuttle & Relay Pumping
Water Shuttle & Relay Pumping is the fifth and closing title in Action Training Systems' Pumping Apparatus series, supplied in South Africa by SkillsTrain, the authorised ATS distributor. Where there is no hydrant at the fire, water has to be brought to it, either shuttled in by tanker or moved pump to pump along a relay. This closing title of the Pumping Apparatus series covers both methods: running a shuttle cycle that keeps tankers filling and dumping without the supply running dry, and building a relay that holds pressure over distance.
It is the advanced water-supply skill that rounds out the series, drawing on the pump operation and positioning covered in the earlier modules.
Like the rest of the ATS range, the title uses an interactive teach, test and track model: it does not only quiz a learner, it teaches, and when an answer is wrong the course stops, backs up and replays the material before letting them move on. ATS puts the average length of its interactive courses at about an hour. The series sits in ATS's Driver/Operator range and is built to NFPA (the National Fire Protection Association) standard 1002, the apparatus driver and operator professional qualification, which ATS keeps current as the NFPA consolidates its standards.
Within the same five-title Pumping Apparatus series, SkillsTrain also supplies Safe Operation of Emergency Vehicles, Positioning Apparatus, Operating Fire Pumps and Apparatus Inspection & Maintenance, so a department can source the whole pathway from one supplier.
As the authorised ATS distributor in South Africa, SkillsTrain supplies it as an interactive online video course and on USB, individually or as part of the complete series, so South African services can buy ATS content locally rather than importing it directly. Who it is for: pumping apparatus operators and rural or under-hydranted services needing water supply beyond a direct hydrant connection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where does this sit in the series?
Fifth and final title in the five-part Pumping Apparatus series.
Why does it matter for a service without reliable hydrants?
Water shuttle and relay pumping is how a crew keeps water flowing to a fire with no direct hydrant supply, moving it by tanker shuttle or pump-to-pump relay instead.
Which standard does it align to?
It is built to NFPA 1002, the apparatus driver and operator professional qualification.
