Standard First Aid, CPR, and AED
Standard First Aid, CPR, and AED is ECSI's core student manual covering first aid, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and AED (automated external defibrillator) use, developed in partnership with AAOS (the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons) and ACEP (the American College of Emergency Physicians). SkillsTrain is the authorised distributor importing and supplying it into Africa. ECSI, the Emergency Care and Safety Institute, is the Jones and Bartlett family's training course brand for first aid and safety courses.
This is the standard, entry level course manual most workplace and community first aid programmes use, covering recognising an emergency, basic first aid skills, CPR and defibrillator use for the general public or workplace first aider, rather than clinical or EMS (Emergency Medical Services) level training. Its scope is deliberately kept to what a bystander or designated workplace first aider can realistically learn and retain in a short course, so that the training translates into confident action in the first minutes of an emergency rather than overloading a learner with clinical detail they will not use.
Because this is usually the first, and sometimes the only, formal safety course many workplace employees ever complete, ECSI builds the manual around the small number of actions, calling for help, starting CPR, using an AED, controlling bleeding, that make the biggest difference to survival in those first minutes.
Who it is for: workplace first aiders, community first aid students and any organisation running a standard first aid certification course. SkillsTrain supplies this as ECSI's published work; we do not write or accredit it.
