02 - Stabilization

Stabilization is the second title in Action Training Systems' Vehicle Extrication series, and SkillsTrain, the authorised Action Training Systems (ATS) distributor in South Africa, supplies it locally. It follows the Incident Overview title and sets the safety foundation for everything that comes after: before any cutting or patient access begins, the vehicle itself has to be made still.

The title demonstrates how to stabilise a vehicle resting on four wheels, a vehicle lying on its side, and a vehicle resting on its roof, each of which behaves differently and needs a different approach. It shows how to prevent forward movement of the vehicle and how to stabilise a vehicle that has come to rest against another object, such as a second car, a wall or a pole. It also deals with patient stabilisation, keeping the casualty supported and still while the scene around them is secured.

It uses the same teach, test and track model as the rest of the ATS range: a learner is assessed as they move through the title, and any section answered incorrectly is replayed before they are allowed to continue. The programme runs about 19 minutes and is supplied on USB or as a classroom streaming option, individually or as part of the complete ten-title series.

Within the ten-title Vehicle Extrication pathway, SkillsTrain supplies the titles in sequence, from Incident Overview and this Stabilization title through Hazard Control and Safety, Initial Procedures, and the door, roof, interior and advanced access titles that follow, so a rescue team can train the whole extrication in order.

Who it is for: rescue technicians who need sound stabilisation competency before they pick up a cutting tool, and training officers building a vehicle extrication programme from the ground up.
