NFPA 1 Fire Code

NFPA 1, the Fire Code, is the core fire prevention code published by NFPA (the National Fire Protection Association), and SkillsTrain imports and supplies copies into Africa. It is the document a fire inspector or code enforcement officer works from when assessing whether a building and its use comply with fire prevention requirements.

It is useful to understand where NFPA 1 sits relative to the firefighter qualification standards. NFPA 1010 and the related professional qualification standards are about the competence of the people, the firefighters and officers. NFPA 1 is about the built environment, the rules a structure, its systems and its occupants must follow to reduce the chance of a fire starting and to limit its spread and consequences if one does. It pulls together fire prevention requirements across a wide range of occupancies and hazards into a single enforceable code that an authority having jurisdiction can adopt and apply.

That makes it a reference on the fire prevention and inspection side of the service, complementing the Fire Inspection and Code Enforcement training content in our range, rather than the operational firefighting manuals. Because it is adopted and enforced by an authority having jurisdiction, the edition in force matters: a building is assessed against the edition the local authority has adopted, which may not be the newest one NFPA has published.

Who it is for: fire inspectors, code enforcement officers, fire prevention officers and AHJs (authorities having jurisdiction).

SkillsTrain imports and supplies the NFPA code document as published. We do not write or amend NFPA codes, and we do not act as an authority having jurisdiction. NFPA revises its codes on a cycle, so confirm the edition you need with us when you order.
