NFPA 470 Hazardous Materials and WMD for Responders
NFPA 470 is the standard document itself, published by NFPA (the National Fire Protection Association), and SkillsTrain imports and supplies copies for services and AHJs (authorities having jurisdiction) that need the source reference rather than a training manual built from it.
The 2022 edition is a consolidation. It brought together several older separate hazardous materials standards, including NFPA 472 and 473, into one Standard for Hazardous Materials and WMD (weapons of mass destruction) for Responders. It sets the competence requirements across the responder tiers, awareness, operations and technician level, that a hazmat response is staffed and assessed against.
It is the reference the current HAZMAT training manuals are written to. IFSTA's Hazardous Materials for First Responders, 6th Edition and Jones and Bartlett Learning's Hazardous Materials: Awareness and Operations are both built to meet NFPA 470, which is why those manuals carry the new number. A response planner or examiner who needs to map training to specific job performance requirements works from the standard itself, not the textbook derived from it.
Holding the standard matters because a hazmat response is staffed by level. The standard sets out what an awareness level person must be able to do, what an operations level responder adds, and what a technician must demonstrate, so a service can match the people it trains and deploys to the roles it actually needs to fill. The manuals teach that content, but the standard is where the required competencies are defined and against which a programme is validated.
Who it is for: AHJs, hazmat response planners, training officers and examiners who need the standard itself.
SkillsTrain imports and supplies the NFPA document as published. We do not author or amend it and we do not accredit responders. NFPA revises its standards on a cycle, so confirm the current edition with us when you order.
Frequently Asked Questions
What older standards does it replace?
NFPA 472 and 473 and related hazardous materials standards, which the 2022 edition consolidated into one NFPA 470.
Is this the same as a HAZMAT training manual?
No. This is the standard itself. Training manuals such as IFSTA's Hazardous Materials for First Responders and Jones and Bartlett's Hazardous Materials: Awareness and Operations are separate books written to meet it.
What edition is current?
