NFPA 1010 Professional Qualifications for Firefighters

NFPA 1010, the Standard on Professional Qualifications for Firefighters, is the standard itself, not a training workbook. SkillsTrain imports and supplies copies for fire services, AHJs (authorities having jurisdiction), training officers and examiners who need the actual reference document rather than a manual written to it. It is published by NFPA, the National Fire Protection Association, the United States standards body that most fire services internationally train against.

The 2024 edition is significant because it is a consolidation. NFPA 1010 pulled together what used to be several separate firefighter standards, NFPA 1001, 1002, 1003 and 1005, into one Professional Qualifications for Firefighters document. It now covers Firefighter I and II, fire apparatus driver and operator, airport firefighter and marine firefighting for land based firefighters, all in a single standard. This consolidation is the single biggest reason fire services and publishers have been refreshing their training stock, because every major manual has had to be re-issued to map to the new number.

It is the reference point the current flagship manuals are written to. IFSTA's Essentials of Fire Fighting, 8th Edition and Jones and Bartlett Learning's Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills, 4th Edition are both built to meet NFPA 1010 (2024). United States agencies are transitioning to the standard, which drives curriculum and certification updates elsewhere too.

Who it is for: AHJs, training officers and examiners who need the source standard, not only a textbook built from it.

SkillsTrain imports and supplies the NFPA document as published. We do not write or alter it and we do not accredit firefighters. Confirm with your own accrediting body when your programme must move to this standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What older standards does NFPA 1010 replace?

NFPA 1001, 1002, 1003 and 1005, which the 2024 edition consolidated into one Professional Qualifications for Firefighters standard covering Firefighter I and II, driver and operator, airport and marine firefighting.

Is this a textbook or the actual standard?

This is the standard itself, published by NFPA. Training manuals such as IFSTA's Essentials of Fire Fighting 8th and Jones and Bartlett's Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills 4th are separate books written to meet it.

When do we need to move to this standard?

Timing depends on your accrediting body. United States agencies are transitioning to NFPA 1010, and that is prompting manuals and certification bodies to update, so confirm with your own accrediting body when your programme must move across.
