02 - Decontamination Procedures

Decontamination Procedures is title two of four in Action Training Systems' HAZMAT Decontamination series, and SkillsTrain, the authorised ATS distributor, supplies it locally as part of that series. It takes the reasoning from the opening title and turns it into the step-by-step work of decontaminating people and equipment safely.

The title demonstrates emergency decontamination procedures and stresses the importance of avoiding cross-contamination, which is the error that quietly spreads a hazard rather than removing it. It outlines the critical set-up factors a crew must consider before operations begin, then demonstrates how a decontamination site is set up and how its zones of operation are arranged so clean and contaminated areas never mix. It works through the nine-step technical decontamination process in sequence, and it addresses the environmental concerns that come with the job, including how runoff is managed.

It sits within ATS's HAZMAT range, aligned to NFPA 470 and positioned for OSHA HAZWOPER content, and uses the teach, test and track model that assesses the learner and replays any section answered incorrectly. The programme runs about 21 minutes and is supplied on USB or as a classroom streaming option, individually or as part of the complete four-title series.

The four-title series also covers Why Decontaminate?, Handling Contaminated Victims, and Mass Decontamination, extending decontamination from routine procedure to the technical and mass-casualty situations where the same principles scale up to large numbers of people and equipment.

Who it is for: responders carrying out decontamination, and training officers delivering a structured decontamination programme.
