02 - HAZMAT Identification

HAZMAT Identification is title two of two in Action Training Systems' HAZMAT Awareness series, and SkillsTrain, the authorised ATS distributor, supplies it locally as part of that series. It follows HAZMAT Recognition and moves a responder from noticing that a hazardous material may be present to identifying what it actually is.

The title starts from the reality that firefighters are often first on the scene of incidents involving unconfined hazardous materials and are expected to identify the material and act appropriately. It teaches the nine hazard classes defined by the United States Department of Transportation, the DOT marking signs used when hazardous materials are in transit, how to use the Emergency Response Guidebook to look up a material and its initial actions, and how to read the NFPA 704 marking system found on fixed facilities. Together these give a responder several ways to identify a hazard from a safe distance.

It sits within ATS's HAZMAT range, aligned to NFPA 470 and positioned for OSHA HAZWOPER awareness, and uses the teach, test and track model that assesses the learner and replays any section answered incorrectly. The programme runs about 17 minutes and is supplied on USB or as a classroom streaming option, individually or as part of the complete two-title series.

It completes the two-title HAZMAT Awareness pathway that opens with HAZMAT Recognition, and sits a step below the separate seven-title HAZMAT Response series, which takes trained responders into defensive response once an incident has been identified.

Who it is for: first responders completing entry-level HAZMAT awareness before any response-level training.
